Project Details

Hill South is home to a promising Main Street NCD. Pirie Associates engaged in a visioning exercise to define aspirational goals and priorities which will aid in guiding investments in placemaking & developments.

THE THREE JEWELS: KIMBERLY SQUARE, KIMBERLY PLAZA, & KIMBERLY PLACE

Three visually cohesive and vibrant series of public realm "jewels" - Kimberly Square, Kimberly Plaza, and Kimberly Place - create a lively necklace of mixed-use activity. The vision celebrates this neighborhood as the "melting pot" of New Haven which has welcomed generations of diverse families to New Haven through the centuries, and still does today.

GOALS

1. Mark the Kimberly Neighborhood with festive elements including gateway beacons, overhead plaza light ribbons, and the iconic clock at Kimberly Square.

2. Connect the public space with food anchors (restaurants or food trucks) and three outdoor "rooms" to create a distinct, culturally resonant sense of place.

3. Refresh facades, add place-based signage, and include public realm amenities for visual cohesion and inviting use.

4. Integrate interpretive wall murals that tell the story of the neighborhood and its history.

5. Develop the Howard Avenue esplanade to connect pedestrians from the Kimberly commercial district to the City Point NCD and the harbor through the district's historic residential architecture.
